Better for our planet
REASON 1 - Life Cycle Assessment
In 2021, EUNOMIA carried out a Life Cycle Assessment, taking into account all aspects of HippoTile production and finding significant savings in terms of carbon emissions in the way of disposing of unwanted waste plastic compared with the current best other way of disposing of it. It has concluded that 1 ton of carbon emissions is saved for every 45m2 HippoTile used. A ton of carbon dioxide is a significant saving. In a life time of 60-80 years, one tree will absorb 1 ton of carbon dioxide. |
REASON 2 - HippoTile can be used INSTEAD of concrete Of all our building materials, concrete has the biggest carbon footprint. The production of one ton of cement, a constituent part of concrete, generates one ton of CO2. Using HippoTile instead of concrete for one 12' x 12' stable saves over 3 tons of carbon emissions. This is the equivalent of driving 5,000 miles in a 7.5T horsebox.! It will take the life time of three trees to absorb this amount of CO2. |
REASON 3 - Saves Water Because improved air quality is a significant benefit of HippoTile flooring and all HippoTile users appreciate the greatly reduced smell of ammonia in their stables, they also quickly notice that less washing and cleaning is required of horses, riders, rugs, tack etc. Aurora Eastwood of South Wonston Farm, a stud, polo and livery yard in Hampshire, has observed: “It’s the difference between having to wash your hair every day and not! With HippoTile, you don’t have to change your coat to go in the car! Straight off the yard, you become far more socially acceptable.” |
REASON 4 - Far less bedding is thrown away As urine and other liquid drains away through the HippoTile flooring and drainage below, bedding does not become soaked and is not required to absorb the wet. Many HippoTile users report that they are throwing away less than half the amount of bedding they were with concrete flooring. From a sustainability point of view, this has many advantages: Less bedding is wasted; Less waste plastic (wrapping) is generated; Less disposal is required. ***It is worth noting: in order to make these savings in bedding disposal, your horses’ beds to not have to be made thinner. Because HippoTile is warmer and more forgiving than concrete, some HippoTile users choose to use less bedding, but others do not. Provided the bedding is not allowed to compact, the stables will continue to drain well. |
